Timeless Truths: Daughters of Jerusalem
Artwork Details:
- Julia Margaret Cameron British, born India, 1865
- Based on the original art "Daughters of Jerusalem" by Julia Margaret Cameron, 1865 - "We are the Daughters of the Witches You Couldn't Burn" paraphrased from Tish Thawer's 2015 novel The Witches of BlackBrook.
Dr. Jen's Description: Let it move you, feel the colors (and the fire eternal)
July Bean's Description: I love the sisterhood represented in this image. The fact that it was painted over 150 years ago just shows how embedded and vital our support systems are and have always been.
When re-making the original image, my head went towards a mosaic to capture the complexity and multi-faceted nature of the feminine archetype. How often are the caretakers expected to change their tones and colors to fit inside their environment? We are so many different beings to so many people.
The original phrase "We are the daughters of the witches you couldn't burn" can be traced back to Tish Thawer's 2015 novel The Witches of BlackBrook. The choice to paraphrase to "women" captures who was really under attack in historical witch hunts. We now know it wasn't sorcery and dark magic at play; it was powerful women who inspire us today.
